JUNE
The Burly County Spring Fair isnât technically at the start of spring, but a lot of people of the town donât consider the season to really start until it happens.
Itâs a pretty big deal. We go to the biggest stadium in the county and people from all over pour in.
Itâs only the second time Iâve performed at one of these, and Iâm still nervous.
âYouâll do fine,â Jennings says from behind me, massaging my shoulders. âThey donât matter. All that matters is you and those barrels.â
âIâm sure my brother thought he was fine too until he met that pole spine-first.â
âDo you have any younger siblings youâll be incensed to find are having a relationship with someone without you knowing about it?â
âIâm the youngest child, so no.â
âThen as I said, youâll be fine.â
Danny will be a spectator for a while. Heâs up there in the crowd now, still drugged out of his mind from the pain. But heâs smiling and celebrating, even if heâs in a wheelchair.
Because everyone acted so quickly and he didnât have any complications, the outlook is overall pretty good for him. Itâll still take months of recovery, then months of physical therapy, but heâll be walking again. If he works hard, heâll be riding again, even. After what happened, I wouldnât blame him if he never wanted to see a bull again, but he wants to be here today, and he made his desires loud and clear. Being back in the sun will be good for him, the doctors said.
The crowd is filled with a bunch of other familiar faces too. Jenningsâ family is there, his four recently married brothers are all there with their wives. I could always sense a bit of jealousy from him when he talked about them, and I do wonder if he intends to stop being the odd man out in the family sooner rather than later.
His cousins, the Roughs, all came over from Home too. That looks like a wild family. Seven kids, their spouses, and some of them have children too. Both the Rowdys and the Roughs value family so much, anyone should be thankful to be adopted into their ranks.
âJune Jenkins, youâre up,â the backstage manager calls out to me as I go to climb onto my horse.
Iâm not that shaken by what happened to Danny. Iâm confident in what I can do, and Iâve done it hundreds of times. My mind is focused on the show, and Iâm not going to make any mistakes. Music fills the arena as I ride out, and the crowd erupts. I urge Fillia to start her run, bending her around the tight corners of the course laid out for me.
Itâs a rush doing this in front of so many people. I look at my brother in the stands and then at Jennings, both of them giving me such stern approval and among the loudest of those cheering.
I could get used to this bit of stardom. I never wanted to be a worldwide megastar, but I can see what celebrities get out of this sort of thing.
